5 tips to looking younger
Have you made any New Year’s resolutions yet? Why not make time to look after your skin in 2011? If you’ve got young children the chances are that you haven’t much time to think about yourself or your skin for that matter. So we asked Nicky Hambleton-Jones to share her top five anti-ageing tips with us.
1. Sun protect
UV Exposure accounts for nearly 60% of premature ageing! Genetics also plays a part as do other lifestyle factors, but if you can protect your skin from the sun, you’ll be doing a lot to maintain a youthful complexion. It’s so easy to wake up on a rainy day and think you don’t need to bother, but then get caught out when the sun comes out later on. Nicky recommends that you use a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 25, rain or shine. Try Avon’s Reversalist Day Cream (www.avonshop.co.uk), SPF 25 or Clinique’s City Block (www.clinique.co.uk)
2. Exfoliate
As we get older our skin doesn’t regenerate as quickly as when we’re young. This means that dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin giving a dry, patchy complexion. To stimulate collagen production and maintain a youthful glow, ensure you exfoliate your skin at least twice a week using a microdermabrasion home kit or a glycolic peel. Visit www.lookandfeelyounger.tv for the low down on cosmetic peels vs. microdermabrasion and which products their users voted best.
3. Use a serum
Most people are nervous about putting oil on their skin for fear it will give them spots. The truth is that it is products that strip the skin of oil or are thick and clog pores that cause spots. Serums are usually oil based and the reason being that oil particles are able to penetrate the skin more effectively than any moisturiser will do. So you’re able to deliver skin building nutrients right to the deeper layers of the skin. Nicky says everyone over the age of 30 should use a serum under their moisturiser twice a day. Prices range from affordable to very expensive, so choose something in your price range and make sure its oil based and packed full of anti-oxidants to maximise its effectiveness. Try Ren’s Omega 3 Night Serum, and Skinceuticals serum 10 AOX which has special antioxidant technology.
This might sound dull and uninteresting, but it’s a vital part of your anti-ageing routine. Did you know that experts suggest your skin ages 8 days for every night you don’t remove your make-up?! Just think one night of neglect = a week of ageing on your face. So make sure you cleanse your skin before you go to bed; once to remove your make-up and once to clean the skin. Choose a cleanser to suit your skin type, but a gentle exfoliating cleanser is always recommended if you don’t have time to pamper your complexion. Try Dermalogica’s skin resurfacing cleanser.
5. Luminate
We can’t always hide our ageing lines and wrinkles and packing on the foundation does little to disguise the truth that lies beneath. It’s far better to create a glowing complexion than a flawless one. Try using a light reflecting foundation like Clarins’ True Radiance foundation, £22.99, for that lovely dewy look. Use a concealer for blemishes that need a slightly heavier hand – Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage is ideal. Or alternatively, apply a tinted moisturiser all over your face and lightly dust a laminating mineral powder all over your face for a luminous glow. Lily Lolo Stardust (lilylolo.co.uk) is great.
